september is...

issued by the President;
Now, Therefore, I, George W. Bush, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 2008 as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this month with the appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.

september has been declared national drug &
alcohol recovery month!

sounds encouraging as a step in the right direction.

increasing awareness can be beneficial by encouraging
people to seek help and reduce misinformation and
the stigma attached to addiction.

the promise of global interdiction is empty and
unrealistic. the major world production of drugs
will continue as long as there is a demand for them.

our best hope for solving the addiction puzzle is
offering treatment rather than punishment for
the addict-alcoholic.

hopefully the september message will carry
throughout the rest of the year.

Hey! I like the new look. Awareness is key I think. Maybe. Maybe, back in the 80's, when I hit that light pole on the onramp to I91 heading from Daniel's in Hamden to my apartment in West Haven, when I had passed out at the wheel and totaled my car, when the cop let the guy who happened to stop drive me home instead of arresting me for drunk driving. Maybe had I been sent to drunk school as they call it, rehab, court ordered treatment, maybe I could have heard a message then. Maybe if that guy had raped me when he brought me home instead of just watching me pass out and calling me for a date the next day which I politely refused, I would have been scared enough to look for help. Instead all I heard was its okay to drink and drive as long as you don't hurt anyone. And make sure you run away from anyone who tries to help you. Geeesh!

Anyway I find it ironic that Bush has made the proclamation. Maybe the one good thing he's done in office. I doubt it was his idea though. Now that's not very nice is it.
