today's questions

what makes you happy?

are anger and resentment triggers or merely annoyances?

where do you see yourself in 5 years?

is addiction still cunning or baffling?

are you able to socialize with family or friends who drink?

how has your religious upbringing affected your recovery?

any time of day particularly difficult to resist temptation?

at what point did you really admit you had a problem?

have you investigated any other recovery methods?

would you prefer to not be an alcoholic?

Wouldn't these be great questions to ask high school students before the addiction gets a hold of them?

Thanks for passing these thoughts along!

I like these questions you post.

what makes you happy? another persons happiness.

are anger and resentment triggers or merely annoyances? Now, annoyances, when I was active..trigggers.

where do you see yourself in 5 years? I try not to look ahead like that anymore...but I do see myself sober.

is addiction still cunning or baffling? YES

are you able to socialize with family or friends who drink? YES

how has your religious upbringing affected your recovery? I think because I lacked a religious upbringing it allowed me to be more open. On the same token, because I was raised with the attitude that religion is opium for the masses, it took some effort to accept and recognize that I had "come to believe"

any time of day particularly difficult to resist temptation? At the beginning it was dinnertime, because preparing dinner and the drinking had become a ritual.

at what point did you really admit you had a problem? The day I got sober, June 11, 2007.

have you investigated any other recovery methods? Absolutely, the paragraph in the chapter More About Alcoholism describes me to a T. "Here are some of the methods we have tried: Drinking beer only, limiting the number of drinks, never drinking alone, never drinking in the morning, drinking only at home, never having it in the house, never drinking during business hours, drinking only at parties, switching from scotch to brandy, drinking only natural wines, agreeing to resign if ever drunk on the job, taking a trip, not taking a trip, swearing off forever (with and without a solemn oath), taking more physical exercise, reading inspirational books, going to health farms and sanitariums, accepting voluntary commitment to asylums - we could increase the list ad infinitum." Not to mention, rational recovery, Women for Sobriety, and other self help resources.

would you prefer to not be an alcoholic? YES but at the same time, I am grateful because no longer oblivious to my journey as part of the Great Mystery,

Interesting stuff, John-boy...I always wondered what the truth was, lol.

They are good questions though. Especially that last one. I don't know anymore. Early on, I used to think so...but the longer I am sober (6/12/90) the more grateful I am to have this program.

It's a mixed blessing, I guess.

what makes you happy?
The simple things. The beauty of nature, spending time in the word, meditating on my program material, and helping others

are anger and resentment triggers or merely annoyances?

Sometimes a bit of both.

where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully my brain will return. LOL

is addiction still cunning or baffling?

Oh YEAH!! The cool thing is that I now have tools to help me and a Higher Power that ROCKS!

are you able to socialize with family or friends who drink?

Yes but only because I really do not like to drink. My things is drug addiction.

how has your religious upbringing affected your recovery?

Yes and no. Initially I rebelled and that's where there was an issue. Now I'm comfortable with the God of my understanding and love my church family.

any time of day particularly difficult to resist temptation?

Yes, at night.

at what point did you really admit you had a problem?

Approximately 5 years before I quit using.

have you investigated any other recovery methods?

Yes

would you prefer to not be an alcoholic/addict?

YES!!! Okay. I'm rethinking this. If I weren't an addict, I wouldn't have this opportunity to encourage those like me. I trust that God has put me right where I'm supposed to be.
