rules for today's youth
one of my all-time favorite lists;
Charles Sykes' original rules:
Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!
Rule 2: The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.
Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.
Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.
Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

heading home
on my way back to Connecticut
after 4 weeks at the retreat.
I managed to lose 16 pounds through
smart eating and 2 to 3 walks a day
on the treadmill, 4 short of my goal.
it's time to seek employment. get
active in the community and continue
my daily walks.
my outlook has improved and I
will continue to make daily affirmations
and set goals for myself.

changing perspective
I've come to realize that I need
to change my outlook on life.
some steps are to;
accentuate the positive
acknowledge the negatives
maintain a "can do" attitude
plan each day
recognise triggers and stressors
initiate dialogue and conversation
focus on making the days count,
rather than counting days.
become more available, reliable,
responsible and accountable.
continue to reinforce the benefits
of continued sobriety;
health and well being
mental clarity
social awareness
family harmony

update from Iowa
starting my third week tomorrow;
after six months of couch-potato life,
I found myself walking the second day
after arrival.
I seem to have had a "forrest gump"
experience and have been walking
daily ever since.
also added 3, 30 minute sessions on
the treadmill, in addition to our daily
trips to the gym.
so far, I have lost 12 pounds between
the exercise and healthy diet;
no snacks, desserts, bread, potatoes
or rice--lots off egg whites, salads,
and fruits and vegetables.
hoping to lose 8 more pounds by the
end of next week---wish me luck!

risk vs reward
why did I drink?
relaxation, self-confidence, social
interaction, less inhibition, and
humour.
quite the list of positive experiences
that explain the allure that drinking
has had for me.
the drawbacks of my imbibing were
weight gain, high blood pressure,
increased depression, emotional
instability and decreased responsibility.
research shows that heavy drinkers tend
to believe the benefits outweigh the drawbacks
the data shows the major dilemma for many
as the immediate, positive social and
emotional results tend to reinforce drinking;
while ignoring the negatives that accumulate
and impact them later.
to me, and surely many others, powerful
reasons for relapse.

euphoric recall
for me, the most difficult aspect
of maintaining sobriety.
having had so many pleasurable,
memorable experiences for many
years, despite knowing the consequences,
the thought of a drink still persists.
what I must also remember are the
negative, harmful effects from my
compulsive drinking years.
the absolute worst events of my life
involved alcohol either directly or
indirectly.
the old mantra, "think it through",
is certainly relevant and important
in my life today

most harmful drug?
according to the latest research,
the 3 most harmful are;
3.) crack
2.) heroin
1.) alcohol
surprised?
I was, yet I wasn't--
the far reaching effects of
drinking in our daily lives
at work, on the road and on
the health professions, make
alcohol a triple threat.
the impact on physical, mental
and emotional health is devastating.
add to that it's legal, and socially
acceptable.
