Kudos for Comments

I was beginning to wonder if anyone was reading my blog, and recently 2 comments were posted!
One comment, from a member of Al-Anon really made my day. It reminded me how we are perceived by the general public, and also of the pervasive nature of alcoholism and addiction.
The latest comment gives an insightful look at the comparison of AA, to preachers who speak of pious deeds, yet don't apply them to their daily life.
I hope I don't sound like I'm bashing AA & NA; I am merely advising people to be aware and not be afraid to question the so-called "elders" of the program.
My approach is to look at someones' emotional, mental and spiritual health; not just the number of years they have accumulated.

i've read about the aa concept on various blogs and recovery sites and have found lots of good hints and tips. i, however, went to a rehab centre that goes the social worker/ occupational therapist / doctor / psychologist / minister route. and both have their merits. i believe in taking the good out of everything you come across and applying the things that works for you and combining it into a 'programme' that works for me personally.

i like your outlook here, and enjoy reading posts.

It is interesting that you note that about AA and NA. I sort of came into the program through Alanon and I didnt like the experience.

My sister was in the throes of her meth addiction, and they kept advocating that I was the victim...that my family was the victim and that she was bad bad bad! I think negating our own agency in this matter is dangerous. I realize that this is different meeting to meeting, but my experience wasnt the greatest.

I agree with shadow that you take things that work for you and leave those that dont. I also believe that one needs to be open minded and at least try things, even if you dont think they will work for you. You cant say it doesnt work unless you try...right?

Kindly,
Kathrin

ONCE MORE
Once more unto the meeting, dear STEPPERS, once more;
or close the Group up with our Chairman dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest STEPPISM, and INSANITY:
But when the blast of the “drunkalogues” blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the ZOMBIE;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye to HOW IT WORKS;
Let it pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the mind be PROGRAMMED
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful SHAPE SHIFTING REPTILES.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide
Hold hard the breath and bend up every BRAIN CELL
To his full height. On, on, you noble STEPPER
Whose mind is completely gone!
Fathers that, like so many PSYCHOPATHS
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their BIG BOOKS for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your SPONSORS; now attest
That those whom you called “old-timers” did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to go INSANE. And you, good woman,
Whose brain was altered with BUCHMANISM, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us 13th STEP you
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble LUST in your eyes.
I see you stand like BILL & BOB HEADS in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your SPONSOR, and upon this charge
Cry “KEEP COMING BACK!” IT WORKS IF YOU WORK IT!
PEACE BE WITH YOU
MICKY
